3rd Africa Protein Summit
News
Our current global food system is facing a crisis. Industrialized animal production exploits people, animals, the environment and is a critical threat to public health.
This unsustainable approach is heavily undermining efforts in fighting climate change and biodiversity loss. There is an urgent need to take action by shifting from industrial animal agriculture and transitioning to Equitable, Humane, and Sustainable animal agriculture.
In recognition of this urgency, World Animal Protection hosts the 3rd Africa Protein Summit that will convene key stakeholders in Nairobi, Kenya on July 17th, 2024.
This high-level event aims to bring together key stakeholders to discuss and develop actionable strategies for moving away from industrial animal agriculture towards agroecologically-produced sustainable foods by focusing on a "just transition" towards equitable, humane, and sustainable food systems.
Why the Urgency?
The current animal production systems prioritize profit over people and the environment. They exploit workers, women, and animals, and threatens public health. Experts advise that global emissions from animal production must decline by 50% by 2030 to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement.
Taking the Centre Stage
This event follows a resounding success of the 2nd Africa Protein Summit held last year, which culminated in key recommendations that were incorporated into the Nairobi Declaration at the inaugural Africa Climate Summit. Building on this foundation, the upcoming summit aims to further our collective mission of transforming protein production systems across Africa.
Building a Movement for Change
The summit brings together High-level participants including government officials, policy makers, industry leaders, international organizations, NGOs, academics, and representatives from smallholder farming communities including pastoralists, women and youth.
This summit is aimed at:
- Promoting Equitable Food Systems: The forum will look at addressing issues within the Food and Climate nexus. We are looking to build on and advance strategies that ensure all African communities have access to nutritious and affordable protein sources.
- Advancing Humane Practices: Encouraging ethical treatment of animals and a shift away from industrial animal agriculture. Acknowledging the role of the latter in the Climate Crisis and
- Fostering Sustainability: Supporting the transition to agroecological methods that preserve the environment, enhance biodiversity, and address climate change challenges.
The 3rd Africa Protein Summit represents a critical step towards a more equitable, humane, and sustainable food future for Africa and the world. By working together, stakeholders can build a food system that nourishes people and protects the planet.
