Dogs have lived with us for centuries as our protectors and loyal friends. Although they look very different from people, they share many of the human body characteristics. Here are five things you probably didn’t know about these great animals.

1.     Dogs have an extraordinarily acute sense of smell; it is about a million times more sensitive than that of people.

2.     Dogs have most of the same muscles, tendons, joints, and ligaments as people.

3.     The main functions of the dog hair coat is to protect the skin and to help regulate temperature.

4.     Dogs are carnivores with teeth designed for rending and tearing meat.

5.     Their toenails help provide traction while running and are also used for digging

Life of a community dog

While dogs play an important role in our societies, they go through some of the most unspeakable challenges. In some countries, during Olympics, they are culled to prevent disturbance to tourists and make the city look clean. In other countries, it is a form of dog bite prevention and to control the spread of rabies. During disasters, they are left behind as their owners’ flee to safety, leaving them vulnerable to hunger and diseases.

Mass dog vaccination and ‘family planning’ for dogs are the best proven solutions to these challenges. They prevent rabies infections and unmanageable dog populations.

In the case of disaster, preparation is the best remedy. Do not lose your animals when a disaster happens, prepare early to be on the safe side.
