Aviana poultry exhibition : Change For Chickens campaign

News

The 16th Aviana International Fair for Poultry and Livestock took place on the 6th-7th July 2017, at the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi, at the Sarit Center.

 Aviana is an international exhibition organizer that has been putting together poultry and livestock exhibitions in Africa for the past decade with an aim to;

·       Bring international organizations to show case their products and services to the Kenyan producers, consumers and the general public.

·       Provide a platform for international organizations to network and build business links with their Kenyan counterparts.

·       Act as a place where the Kenyan producers can learn on the advances in productions systems and see new innovative production techniques and equipment.

Creating awareness on our campaigns

We took part in the fair to showcase our work on animal welfare, specifically, our ‘Change For Chickens’ campaign to an audience of poultry entrepreneurs.

With over 60 international exhibitors from 20 different countries across Africa, Europe, Middle East and Asian countries, this served as a great avenue to reach out to the world.

End inhumane chicken farming practices

With the constant rise in demand for chicken, there has been shocking and inhumane practices in the production systems of industrially-farmed chicken.

At the fair, we unfolded shocking practices within the chicken production systems unknown to consumers. These include:

·       overfeeding

·       cramped living spaces

·       lack of exposure to natural lighting in a means to meet the fast-growing demand for chicken meat.

These leads to painful lameness, overworked hearts and lungs and wounds including skin sores and burns.

Time for change

Our belief is that food retailers, global policy makers and the public have the ability to change the large scale chicken production systems because chicken deserve a life of dignity.

Whilst World Animal Protection does not bar any consumption and/or production of industrially-farmed chicken, we seek to involve food retailers, global policy makers and the public on the importance of animal welfare.

KFC Petition

We also urged the public to sign up our petition were we’re challenging KFC to improve the lives of the millions of chickens that the company serves to its customers around the world. We want the company to commit to criteria, which will see slower growing birds with more space, litter and natural light to allow for a better quality of life. We are now at 270 sign ups.

Join the movement by adding your voice. Sign our petition now, challenging KFC to help end the secret suffering of chickens.

Our belief is that food retailers, global policy makers and the public have the ability to change the large scale chicken production systems because chicken deserve a life of dignity.
