Engaging young leaders on Animal Welfare in Kenya

News

On 7th -9th June 2017, we had the opportunity to create awareness on Animal Welfare at the annual “Fearless Leadership Summit,” organized by the Mavuno Church, Nairobi.

The conference brings together 400 young leaders between 16-28years, from an array of sectors such as education, politics, economics and the church to learn about key facets to effective leadership.

Creating awareness on animal welfare

Being an open platform drawing people from different countries and with the ability to influence for change in their respective capacities, it created an opportunity for us to emphasize the need to push for animals to be put global priority.

“Fearless summit is an annual leadership meeting that brings together leaders from the church and other external sectors- politics, education, business. We wanted to resonate World Animal Protection campaign messages within ‘Change for Chicken’, ‘Better Lives for Dogs’ and Disaster management among the youthful attendees of the summit. Our key objective was to have sign-ups for our National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy petition” – Dr. Victor Yamo

National Disaster Risk Management Policy petition sign up

As part of our sensitization programme, we also lobbied the participants to sign to our ongoing local petition sign up, urging the Kenyan government to pass the National Disaster Risk Management Policy. We managed 67 direct sign ups , marking a steady growth  to our numbers.

Kenya as a signatory to the Sendai Framework is yet to pass the National Disaster Risk Management Policy. This poses a risk to animals following the longstanding drought in Kajiado and Northern Kenya.

Animals do not deserve to die for lack of food and water. You too can add your voice by signing our petition here
